Johanna Elina Sulkunen

Johanna Elina Sulkunen is a composer, vocalist and performer based in Copenhagen, working at the intersection of voice, electronics and audiovisual performance. Through her ongoing project SONORITY, she explores the voice as both instrument and compositional system across concerts, recordings and installations. She is a founding member of the acclaimed vocal ensemble IKI, whose debut album won the Danish Music Award for Jazz Vocal Album of the Year in 2011. In 2024 she performed with Blixa Bargeld in Hotel Pro Forma's Flammenwerfer, with music by Bargeld and Niels Frahm. In 2025 she was selected as a Sonic Diplomacy artist by the Royal Danish Embassy in Japan. Alongside her solo work, she collaborates internationally, currently developing a new release with Japanese koto player Michiyo Yagi, extending her practice into a cross-cultural dialogue between voice and traditional instrumentation. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, a BA in Jazz Vocals from Codarts Rotterdam, and an MA in Anthropology from the University of Helsinki.
